SVP (Systems and Service Engineering)

Role Description
A seasoned Systems and Service engineering professional who will form part of technology
leadership, responsible for ensuring continued, efficient and effective development, maintance
& operations of GST system, GSTN Infrastructure and Dev-Ops framework. Responsibilities
includes, but is not limited to, applications, middleware platforms, Container platforms,
Operating Systems (Primarily Unix, Mac and Windows) and underlying hardware, Network,
Infrastructure services such as backups, Policies within ITIL framework. Incumbent should be
a hands on techie and should have handled internet scale traffic exposed system. Inncumbent
should also be well versed and should be well verse with cloud based platforms on popular
public clouds such as Azure, AWS, GCP etc. A prospective candidate will have deep
understanding of monitoring availability and performance through popular tools and must have
worked on development of monitoring probes through scripts. A deep knowledge of Shell
scripts, Python or perl scripting knowledge and unix internals is desirable.
The role holder would also be responsible for leading the devops function for supporting all
business application systems that include Java and Javascript based applications, Hadoop,
Kafka, OS, MySQL, Memory Cache systems and other infrastructure including an elaborate
network spread across four data centers. He will establish and adhere to the operations as per
the ITIL processes and larger governance Framework of GST System, GSTN and all projects
undertaken by GSTN.
A seasoned technology leader is expected to lead a team of technical resources spread across
various functions of Dev-Ops, Systems and Network administration, Engineering operations,
SLA management, Incident, Change, Release and knowledge management etc. S/he is
supposed to mentor the direct and indirect reports. The team management shall include
management of resources from a Managed Service Provider as well. The prospective candidate
must have exposure to vendor management and should be able to draft effective and
implementable RFPs for selection of vendors.

Mandatory Skillset
• Stronng leadership skills leading, building and mentoring a team of talented engineers
• Knowledge of Linux/Unix based OS administration and internals. Should be comfortable
finding his/her way around a Linux/Unix OS . Very comfortable with /proc and /sys pseudo
filesystems. Deep understanding of how and OS/Computer Program works.
• Fair amount of Experience of working with relational DBs ( Postgres, MySQL, etc ), NoSQL
DB ( Redis, Cassandra, Hbase etc). Should have good exposure to Hadoop Eco-System
• Experience working on Large scale monitoring infrastructure ( Icinga, Prometheus, Nagios
etc), Log aggregators like (flume, Fluentd, Splunk, logstash) and ElasticSearch/Splunk.
• Desirable knowledge of working on config management tools like Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Salt
etc .
• Should be well verse with reading tcpdump, strace/dtrace/ltrace output, crash dumps.
• Good troubleshooting skills on all the OSI layers.
• Good scripting skills on Shell and one high level language like Python/Ruby.

Key Responsibilities
Leading and building a team of talented engineers spread across direct, indirect and
vendor reportees.
Enabling Continued running and operation of applications, middleware and
infrastructure (including DC/ DR) on an ongoing basis of GST system.
Ensure 24X7 availability of all DC and DR to facilitate smooth operations of the
Technology Division
Ensure protection of the IT infrastructure and applications a secure environment by
implementing security protocols and procedures for data backup, storage and access
norms in order to ensure data integrity
Ensure the complete documentations of system configurations and transfer of
knowledge from the System Integrators to the GSTN Team to ensure upkeep and
maintenance of the developed applications and infrastructure
Develop mechanisms for obtaining feedback on the functioning of IT services in
the organisation and ensure timely resolution of user queries as per defined
Organisational guidelines
Monitor and report on the adherence to agreed SLA to ensure effective functioning
of the Operations

Key Attributes & Skills:
Bachelors/Masters in IT/ECE or Masters / Bachelors in Computer Applications or
relevant experience in the domain of IT operations with more than 18 years.
Must have led large teams handling complex and internet scale system. A minimum of
6 years of experience is expected in leading and managing teams.
Role shall include 70% management and 30% hands on experience in managing GSTN
owned technology systems
12-14 years of experience in designing and maintaining IT function of large
Extensive knowledge of any flavor of Unix/Unix Based Systems and applications
Solid knowledge of system administration and Infrastructure architecture design
An excellent knack of troubleshooting issues arising out of Network, System or
Strong fundamentals of OSI model and TCP/IP stack on Systems
Extensive experience on handling OpenSource Software systems like OpenLdap,
WebServers (Apache, nGnix, etc)
Experience of leading a agile and responsive team consisting of IT/Technology
software and hardware professionals
Experience of implementing IT specific systems and solutions across IT functions
Solid understanding of financials of IT systems
